Choosing a zipper that works with the whole garment

Consider opening type, tape colour and sample garment use when selecting a zipper.

Navy tape metal zipper

A zipper connects panels while shaping the line of a garment. A jacket front, dress back and pocket opening serve different purposes. Start by identifying the opening type and its position. Understanding a closed-end, open-end or two-way construction in the actual design is more useful than comparing teeth alone and gives the sample request a clearer basis.

View tape colours beside the fabric they will accompany. A zipper concealed within a seam allowance and one deliberately left exposed call for different visual decisions. The shine of metal teeth, the outline of molded teeth and the fine texture of nylon coils influence the result. Prepare physical options and compare their materials on the same fabric.

Testing should go beyond a single pull. Open and close the sample garment in the way a wearer is expected to use it. Check whether the pull is easy to hold, the sewing area sits flat and the panels interfere with movement. Confirm length, care or use-specific requirements with the supplier before purchasing and verify them on actual samples.

Once a choice is approved, record the length, colour, opening construction and pull style together, keeping the matching reference sample. This makes later pattern revisions and repeat enquiries easier to describe accurately. A suitable zipper should work with the visual design and feel straightforward in everyday use. Both impressions are best judged when the component is installed in the garment.
